Rushed to the Right Specialists Who Could Help 🐶✨

When sudden changes happen, every moment matters. For Kee Long and his family, the unthinkable occurred when Rush, their lively Weimaraner, suddenly struggled to stand. The pup who once raced through dog parks now swayed unsteadily, unable to keep his balance. Alarmed, his family sought help from their trusted veterinarian at Vets for Life, who quickly recognised the severity of his condition and referred him to Beecroft Animal Specialist & Emergency Hospital.

At Beecroft, Dr Matthias le Chevoir, board-certified in neurology and neurosurgery, conducted a thorough assessment. Advanced imaging confirmed congenital hydrocephalus, a condition where excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain. This diagnosis was particularly rare in large breed of dogs like the Weimaraner. Initially, medication helped control the symptoms, and Rush seemed to return to his usual self. But three months later, his condition worsened. His legs began trembling, and his eyes twitched uncontrollably, signalling that medical management was no longer enough.

To give Rush the best chance of recovery, Dr Matthias recommended ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery, a procedure to redirect the excess fluid from his brain to his abdomen, where it could be reabsorbed. The surgery was a success, and as Rush recovered, his strength gradually returned. While a slight tremor remains, his condition is stable, and he has fully regained his ability to run, play, and enjoy life just as he did before.
