Ajjekay’s fall: How she recovered from a traumatic accident

On an October evening, a cat named Ajjekay fell off his fourth floor home and ended up in a precarious position where her life hung in the balance.

When her owner, Madam Aisha Aziz, returned home that Sunday night, she found a window opened and her pet missing. Fearing the worst, she headed straight down and saw Ajjekay – thoroughly drenched – growling meekly to herself. “She allowed me to pick her up,” she recalls, her voice still tinged with the raw emotion of that moment, “and I knew immediately something was very wrong with her.”

Ajjekay at rest

After securing Ajjekay in a box, Madam Aisha reached out to her primary vet before rushing to Beecroft Animal Specialist & Emergency Hospital.

Dr Sally Tan, one of its emergency and critical care veterinarians, attended that night. A detailed examination that included x-rays, blood tests and an ultrasound revealed the extent of the cat’s injuries: A comminuted ilial fracture on the right side, luxations in the sacroiliac and sacro-caudal regions, and suspected lung contusions.

Dr Sally had pointed out that the comminuted fracture was the most problematic. The bone was not merely broken but had shattered into multiple fragments. It would require meticulous surgical reconstruction.

Ajjekay was referred to Dr Patrick Maguire, Beecroft’s surgical specialist.

“I was thankful how the team, especially the doctors, kept me updated, even at night. Dr Patrick was very thorough and compassionate in his explanations. I always look at life positively, so it was good that they looked at the bright side by outlining potential recovery chances.”

Ajjekay’s injuries and repairs

The emergency team stabilized Ajjekay with pain medication, oxygen, and careful fluid management. Two days after admission, Dr Patrick performed the delicate pelvic fracture repair.

But the repairs were only the beginning. To improve the chances of complete recovery, the rehabilitation team stepped in with a regime of laser therapy to reduce inflammation, manual therapies for muscle stiffness, and a tailored home exercise program to help Ajjekay rebuild her strength.

At the heart of it all, Madam Aisha became more than an owner – she became a critical partner in her cat’s recovery, observing changes, ensuring prescribed therapies were completed, and transitioning Ajjekay from tube feeding to independent eating.

“Before taking her to the hospital, I prayed and trusted the doctors. Recovery, I believe, also comes from spiritual strength.”

Ajjekay and her human

By early November, Ajjekay was ambulatory, displaying only a mild grade 1/4 lameness in her hindlimbs—a remarkable transformation from the critically injured cat who had fallen four floors just weeks earlier. Her journey represents more than a medical success story; it’s a powerful narrative about the extraordinary bonds between humans and their animal companions and the potential of specialist-led veterinary medicine and patient-centric care.
