My Dog Keeps Licking His Paws and My Vet Found No Skin Problem — What’s Happening?

Dogs lick their paws occasionally — it’s part of normal grooming. But when the licking becomes repetitive, obsessive, and results in red, raw, or damaged paws, something deeper is at play. When your vet has already ruled out skin conditions, allergies, and infections, the answer often lies in behavioural medicine.

Why Do Dogs Lick Their Paws Compulsively?

When dermatological causes have been excluded, repetitive paw licking is typically a compulsive or stereotypic behaviour — often rooted in frustration, anxiety, or conflict. In dogs, these emotional states can generate a type of displaced, repetitive self-directed behaviour that provides temporary relief from inner tension.

Changes in routine are a particularly common trigger in Singapore households — the owner returning to the office after working from home, the arrival of a baby, a move to a new flat, or changes in the daily walk schedule.

Avoid Saying “Stop It”:Repeatedly telling your dog to stop licking can actually increase their frustration — which is likely already the cause of the licking. It creates an emotional feedback loop that worsens the behaviour.

When Should You Seek Professional Help?

If the licking is occurring multiple times daily, is difficult to interrupt, and has resulted in wounds or hair loss, it’s time to consult a veterinary behaviourist. Compulsive behaviours, left untreated, tend to intensify over time.

Note: Even though dermatological causes have been ruled out, a full behavioural consultation will still review your dog’s physical health history — as pain, stress hormones, and even parasites in younger dogs can contribute to the picture.

Treatment Approaches

Treatment involves identifying and reducing the source of frustration or anxiety in the dog’s life — improving environmental enrichment, adjusting routines, and implementing structured behaviour modification. Medication targeting repetitive behaviours and anxiety can significantly accelerate recovery. Most dogs show complete or near-complete resolution with dedicated treatment.
